Kitesurfing in Richards Bay

Richards Bay is one of our favourite kitesurfing spots in South Africa. Originally an industrial town, Richards Bay has so much to offer as far as kitesurfing goes. The wind is almost always at least a few knots stronger than in Durban, which lies roughly 2 hours south of Richards Bay, and they have the best of both flat water kiting and wave riding in the ocean.

Weather conditions are pretty predictable in Richards Bay. The North Easter brings sunny and hot weather, and produces awesome kiteboarding in the sea at Alkandstrand. The waves here are generally rather meaty and powerful, with quite a noteworthy shore break.

The South Wester is known to bring overcast or rainy weather, but makes for perfect kitesurfing conditions at Pelican Island in the harbour. The wind blows offshore from this manmade island, which ensures smooth kiting conditions on flat water, perfect for freestyle kitesurfing. The SW wind is often gusty due to the offshore wind direction.

Kiteboarding is great all year round, but best in the summertime where NE winds abound.
