Kitesurfing in Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is not known as the windy city for nothing… kitesurfers and windsurfers from all over the world migrate to Cape Town to experience some of the best kiteboarding in the world. Many international kiteboarding Pros have made Cape Town their training grounds, since this is the one place they are guaranteed plenty of wind, often.

But it isn’t just the strong winds that draw the kiteboarders to this special place. Cape Town is a beautiful and culturally diverse city. It has its own unique character and offers a bit of everything, from warm sunny weather in summer, big city life, stunning nature reserves, countless wine estates, great beaches… and then there’s the iconic table mountain…

Best of all, there’s definitely no shortage of great kitesurfing spots! In fact there are too many to mention all of them here, but Big Bay (Bloubergstrand), Dolphin Beach, Doodles Beach, Kite Beach, Milnerton Lagoon and Sunset Beach are some of the more popular kiting spots in the Table Bay / Bloubergstrand area.

Of course popular also means more crowded, but there are plenty of other great spots to explore around the cape peninsular that aren’t as busy, such as Betty’s Bay Beach, Struisbaai, Long Beach (Kommetjie), Muizenburg, The Strand, Witsands and more.

So what do we mean by very windy? Well, you can expect a wind range from about 18 to 40 knots. The wind tends to reach the higher wind digits in the afternoons, sometimes getting a bit gusty.

A highlight of kitesurfing the Bouberg / Table View stretch of beaches would definitely be the fantastic downwind runs. Typically one would start at Sunset beach or any of the other nearby beaches and end at Doodles Beach, or the famous Doodles Beachfront Bar and restaurant to be exact… ;-)

We highly recommend that every kitesurfer experience Cape Town at least once in their life, but we are sure you will be back for more…
